The Chapel of Our Mother of Good Counsel is located on the crypt level of
the Basilica and is on the right side as you face the crypt church. It is located
immediately off of the Memorial Hall.
The following text can be found on the kneeler in the front of this chapel.
On April 25, 1467, during a religious festival in Genazzano, Italy, an Augustinian chronicler of the day reports, "a certain picture of the Blessed Virgin miraculously appeared from on high on the wall of the church," dedicated to Our Mother of Good Counsel. When the cloud disappeared, the festive crowd found that a small, fragile picture of Our Lady with her Child had been left behind. The painting was on a paper thin sheet of plaster and rested against the wall almost without support. "Our Mother of Good Counsel" as it has come to be known, has stood without support ever since then, even through earth quakes, and aerial bombings during World War II, which destroyed much of the church. The painting is believed to have had its origin from Scutari in Albania.
Countless miracles have been attributed to Our Mother of Good Counsel. It is noteworthy that Pope John XXIII made a special pilgrimage to this Augustinian Basilica in Genazzano before the opening of the Second Vatican Counsel praying that Mary, Our Mother of Good Counsel guide the Church in its renewal. On April 26, 1965, through the generosity of the Augustinian Friars this chapel, in honor of Our Mother of Good Counsel, was solemnly dedicated.
